Forgiveness

وَالَّذِيۡنَ اِذَا فَعَلُوۡا فَاحِشَةً اَوۡ ظَلَمُوۡۤا اَنۡفُسَهُمۡ ذَكَرُوا اللّٰهَ فَاسۡتَغۡفَرُوۡا لِذُنُوۡبِهِمۡ وَمَنۡ يَّغۡفِرُ الذُّنُوۡبَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ  وَلَمۡ يُصِرُّوۡا عَلٰى مَا فَعَلُوۡا وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏ ۝
Wallatheena ithafaAAaloo fahishatan aw thalamoo anfusahum thakarooAllaha fastaghfaroo lithunoobihim wamanyaghfiru aththunooba illa Allahuwalam yusirroo AAala ma faAAaloo wahumyaAAlamoon
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves by transgression, remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allāh? - and who do not persist in what they have done while they know.

Theme of the Ayat

The Path to Repentance: Seeking forgiveness immediately after major sin.

The Insight

If the righteous commit a grave sin or wrong themselves, they immediately remember God and seek forgiveness, knowing only God forgives sins. Repent without delay. When you fall into error, do not allow time for guilt to fester. Immediately remember God's vastness and seek sincere, restorative forgiveness.

وَ مَنۡ يَّعۡمَلۡ سُوۡٓءًا اَوۡ يَظۡلِمۡ نَفۡسَهٗ ثُمَّ يَسۡتَغۡفِرِ اللّٰهَ يَجِدِ اللّٰهَ غَفُوۡرًا رَّحِيۡمًا‏ ۝
Waman yaAAmal soo-an aw yathlimnafsahu thumma yastaghfiri Allaha yajidi Allahaghafooran raheema
And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allāh will find Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

Theme of the Ayat

The Forgiveness of Repentance: Pardon for those who seek forgiveness after wrongdoing.

The Insight

Whoever commits a wrong or wrongs himself and then seeks God's forgiveness will find God forgiving and merciful. **Turn back immediately after sin.** No matter the size of the sin, immediate and sincere repentance is the path to receiving God's vast pardon.

اِلَّا مَنۡ تَابَ وَاٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًاصَالِحًـا فَاُولٰٓٮِٕكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللّٰهُ سَيِّاٰتِهِمۡ حَسَنٰتٍ​ ؕ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ غَفُوۡرًا رَّحِيۡمًا‏ ۝
Illa man taba waamanawaAAamila AAamalan salihan faola-ikayubaddilu Allahu sayyi-atihim hasanatinwakana Allahu ghafooran raheema
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

Reflect on the meaning: "Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.".

وَهُوَ الَّذِىۡ يَقۡبَلُ التَّوۡبَةَ عَنۡ عِبَادِهٖ وَيَعۡفُوۡا عَنِ السَّيِّاٰتِ وَيَعۡلَمُ مَا تَفۡعَلُوۡنَ ۙ‏ ۝
Wahuwa allathee yaqbalu attawbataAAan AAibadihi wayaAAfoo AAani assayyi-atiwayaAAlamu ma tafAAaloon
And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.

Reflect on the meaning: "And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.".

قُلۡ يٰعِبَادِىَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَسۡرَفُوۡا عَلٰٓى اَنۡفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُوۡا مِنۡ رَّحۡمَةِ اللّٰهِ​ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَغۡفِرُ الذُّنُوۡبَ جَمِيۡعًا​ ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الۡغَفُوۡرُ الرَّحِيۡمُ‏ ۝
Qul ya AAibadiya allatheenaasrafoo AAala anfusihim la taqnatoo min rahmatiAllahi inna Allaha yaghfiru aththunoobajameeAAan innahu huwa alghafooru arraheem
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves by sinning, do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

Reflect on the meaning: "Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves by sinning, do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."".

Surah Hud 11:90
وَاسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡا رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوۡبُوۡۤا اِلَيۡهِ​ؕ اِنَّ رَبِّىۡ رَحِيۡمٌ وَّدُوۡدٌ‏ ۝
Wastaghfiroo rabbakum thumma toobooilayhi inna rabbee raheemun wadood
And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate."
