Those who associated others with Allāh will say, "If Allāh had willed, we would not have associated anything and neither would our fathers, nor would we have prohibited anything." Likewise did those before deny until they tasted Our punishment. Say, "Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? You follow not except assumption, and you are not but misjudging."

Theme of the Ayat

The Excuse of Ignorance: The polytheists' false excuse of divine decree.

The Insight

The polytheists claim that if God had not willed it, they would not have committed Shirk, using God's decree as an excuse. **Reject passive fatalism.** Do not use God's decree as an excuse for your moral failures. You were granted free will; accountability is based on your conscious choice.
