Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:79)

كَانُوۡا لَا يَتَـنَاهَوۡنَ عَنۡ مُّنۡكَرٍ فَعَلُوۡهُ ؕ لَبِئۡسَ مَا كَانُوۡا يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ‏ ۝

Kanoo la yatanahawnaAAan munkarin faAAaloohu labi/sa ma kanooyafAAaloon

They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.

The Failure to Forbid: Their failure to challenge and stop one another's immorality.

The Insight

They failed to challenge and forbid one another's evil deeds. **Uphold the social duty of reform.** Recognizing and actively challenging sin (*Amr bi al-Ma'ruf*) in your community is a social duty. Failure to do so leads to collective moral decay.
