O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves i.e., believers, for they will not spare you any ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.

Tadabbur (Reflection)

Theme of the Ayat

The Test of Intimacy: Choosing close friends only from within the believing community.

The Insight

Believers are warned not to take outsiders as close confidantes, as they desire to inflict ruin and their hatred is evident. Choose allies carefully. While you should be just and kind to all, reserve your intimate trust, strategic loyalty, and deepest moral alliance for those whose core values and loyalty to God are aligned with yours.
