And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit should be taken. And if one of you entrusts another, then let him who is entrusted discharge his trust faithfully and let him fear Allāh, his Lord. And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allāh is Knowing of what you do.

Theme of the Ayat

The Trust of the Deposit: The duty to honor verbal trust when writing is difficult.

The Insight

If writing a contract is not possible (e.g., when traveling), the agreement must be based on absolute trust, and the trustee must honor his pledge, fearing God. Honor the unwritten contract. When circumstances demand a verbal agreement, let your piety be the guarantor. Fulfilling a promise made only on trust is a high spiritual virtue.
