Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195)

وَاَنۡفِقُوۡا فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا تُلۡقُوۡا بِاَيۡدِيۡكُمۡ اِلَى التَّهۡلُكَةِ ۖ ۛۚ وَاَحۡسِنُوۡا ۛۚ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ‏ ۝

Waanfiqoo fee sabeeli Allahi walatulqoo bi-aydeekum ila attahlukati waahsinooinna Allaha yuhibbu almuhsineen

And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction by refraining. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.

Theme of the Ayat

The Command to Spend: Avoiding self-destruction by neglecting charity.

The Insight

Believers are commanded to spend in God's cause and not to cast themselves into destruction by neglecting this duty. Invest in your collective future. Neglecting financial duties to the community (charity, Zakat) leads to social breakdown and spiritual destruction. Spend generously and perform good deeds with excellence (*Ihsan*).
