Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:76)

قُلۡ اَ تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ مَا لَا يَمۡلِكُ لَـكُمۡ ضَرًّا وَّلَا نَفۡعًا ؕ وَاللّٰهُ هُوَ السَّمِيۡعُ الۡعَلِيۡمُ‏ ۝

Qul ataAAbudoona min dooni Allahi mala yamliku lakum darran wala nafAAan wallahuhuwa assameeAAu alAAaleem

Say, "Do you worship besides Allāh that which holds for you no power of harm or benefit while it is Allāh who is the Hearing, the Knowing?"

Theme of the Ayat

The Folly of Intercession: Worshipping those who cannot harm or benefit.

The Insight

They are questioned why they worship intercessors who possess no power to harm or benefit, or even hear their call. **Worship only the Competent.** Direct all worship and supplication exclusively to God, who alone possesses the power to intervene, harm, or benefit.
