Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allāh and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allāh." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims submitting to Him."

Tadabbur (Reflection)

Theme of the Ayat

The Common Word: Calling the People of the Book to the core monotheistic principle.

The Insight

The Prophet is commanded to call the People of the Book to the 'common word': worshipping God alone, taking no partners, and submitting only to Him. Seek foundational agreement. When engaging in dialogue, focus on the fundamental, unifying principles of monotheism and submission, rather than starting with divisive differences.
