Why is it that when a single disaster struck you on the day of Uḥud, although you had struck the enemy in the battle of Badr with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves i.e., due to your sin." Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

Tadabbur (Reflection)

Theme of the Ayat

The Justice of Consequence: The trial is a consequence of your own actions.

The Insight

The believers are questioned why they questioned the Uhud defeat, having inflicted twice as much loss upon the enemy. Accept personal responsibility. Do not blame external forces or God for misfortune. Acknowledge that suffering and trial are often consequences of your own past mistakes, providing a necessary lesson.
