And recall when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, saying, "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said instead, "We hear and disobey." And their hearts absorbed the worship of the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."

Tadabbur (Reflection)

Theme of the Ayat

The Test of Commitment: The contradiction between their word and their action.

The Insight

They were reminded of the severe warnings when they took the covenant at Mount Sinai, yet their hearts loved the calf more than God's command. Your true devotion is revealed under pressure. When your commitment is tested, and the choice is between God's clear law and a beloved passion (money, idol, ego), which do you choose? Action speaks louder than profession.
