وَاِنۡ كَانَ ذُوۡ عُسۡرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ اِلٰى مَيۡسَرَةٍ ​ؕ وَاَنۡ تَصَدَّقُوۡا خَيۡرٌ لَّـكُمۡ​ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ‏ ۝
Wa-in kana thoo AAusratinfanathiratun ila maysaratin waan tasaddaqookhayrun lakum in kuntum taAAlamoon
And if someone is in hardship, then let there be postponement until a time of ease. But if you give from your right as charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew.

The Ethics of Debt: Granting respite or full forgiveness to the debtor.

The Insight

If a debtor is in hardship, grant him respite until he can afford to pay, but full charity (forgiveness) is better. Lead with compassion in finance. When dealing with debtors, prioritize mercy over profit. Forgiving a debt, especially to someone struggling, is one of the highest acts of compassion and earns great spiritual return.
