Those who do not know say, "Why does Allāh not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain in faith.

Tadabbur (Reflection)

Theme of the Ayat

The Demand for Visual Proof: The stubbornness of past nations.

The Insight

Past ignorant nations demanded God speak to them directly or provide a sign like those given to the people before them. The Creator asserts that signs are clear, but stubborn hearts will always reject them. Do not demand spectacular proof. If the moral clarity and logic of the Qur'an are insufficient, no physical miracle will suffice. The sincere heart sees signs everywhere, while the obstinate heart sees none.
